Those women and 33 other people were arrested over the past several weeks during an investigation into the suspected sex trade operating through Craigslist, a popular Internet classified site. The operation, conducted by the Sheriff's Office with the help of Port St. Lucie police, took place Sept. One of those arrested, Lisa M.
Savoy, 45, of Fort Pierce, is suspected of having a "little black book" with the names of more than a dozen customers.
In some cases, deputies posed as johns seeking the services of prostitutes, and in others, a female deputy posed as a prostitute and placed an ad on Craigslist. The arrests happened at motels in St. Lucie County.
On Craigslist's Treasure Coast section under services, a listing for erotic brings up a warning and disclaimer. To get into the erotic section, Internet surfers must agree that they are at least 18, acknowledge they could be exposed to adult content, agree to "flag as 'prohibited' anything illegal or in violation" of Craigslist's terms of use, agree to report suspected exploitation of minors and release Craigslist from liability. During the sheriff's sting operation, women danced nude and brought condoms and lubricant, discussing prices and services, according to sheriff's reports.
Sometimes others waited in vehicles outside, and would get part of the proceeds. Mascara said the investigation began after a citizen complained about an apparent scam involving a car on Craigslist, with the complainant also mentioning what he thought were prostitution activities.
Mascara said there's no shortage of women advertising apparently suggestive services and that it was easy for undercover investigators to arrange a rendezvous. Most of those arrested listed addresses in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties, though some were from further south. Most of the charges were for solicitation of prostitution or deriving proceeds from prostitution. He has been working here sinceand is based in Stuart.
